July, for any golf enthusiast, carries the sweet scent of thick links grass and the purest tradition. From July 16 to 19, 2026, the eyes of the entire sporting world will be on Southport, England, where the legendary layout of the Royal Birkdale Golf Club will play host to the 154th Open Championship.
The Open Championship (heaven forbid you call it the "British Open" in front of a purist from the Royal & Ancient of St Andrews) is not just the final Major of the year; it's the original tournament, the very cradle of professional golf. And when the sacred quest for the Claret Jug lands at Royal Birkdale for the eleventh time in its history, we already know we're in for an absolute epic. The course, widely regarded as the finest track in England, is gearing up to test the best players on the planet with its signature menu of narrow fairways, funneling bunkers, and a wind that is ready to shuffle the deck with every single tee shot.
The Royal Birkdale Factor: Where Precision Outdrives Power
Unlike other modern American designs, Royal Birkdale is a wonderfully democratic yet ruthless track. Originally designed by George Lowe and redesigned by J.H. Taylor, it stretches over a testing 7,156 yards for a very demanding Par 70.
Its defining feature lies in the dunes: unlike other links courses where you play over the dunes with blind shots, at Birkdale the fairways run right between the dunes. This means your target lines are perfectly visible from the tee, but they demand absolute precision. Landing in the transition rough here almost mathematically means you'll have to play a lay-up to get back on track, saying goodbye to any chance of hunting the pin with your next shot. Whoever hoists the trophy in July will need to display absolute mastery in their ball-striking and, above all, infinite patience on intermediate approaches.
Snippets of History and Lore to Fuel the Legend
Royal Birkdale has written some of the most dramatic and spectacular pages in golf history. Here are a few fantastic trivia nuggets to show off in the clubhouse over the tournament weekend:
Jordan Spieth's Masterclass (2017): The last time the Open was held here in 2017, Jordan Spieth delivered one of the wildest moments in modern golf. On Sunday at the 13th hole, after a disastrous tee shot that ended up literally behind the dunes among the TV trucks. After an agonizing 20 minutes to take a drop due to a ruling regarding the driving range (which hadn't been marked out of bounds by the organizers), Spieth played a sensational recovery shot from the practice block, saving an incredible bogey. From then on, he went on a tear with three birdies and an eagle, capturing the Claret Jug in a grandstand cinematic finish.
Arnold Palmer's Blackberry Bush Recovery (1961): In 1961, "The King" Arnold Palmer cemented his legend at the 15th hole. His ball lay beneath a thick blackberry bush. Instead of declaring it unplayable, Palmer lashed a 6-iron with such raw power that he snapped the branches and sent the ball flying all the way to the green. That iconic shot, celebrated today by a plaque on the course, gave him the momentum to claim his very first Open triumph.
The Ryder Cup Concession (1969): Birkdale is not just about the Open Championship. In 1969, it hosted one of the most tense Ryder Cups in history. On the final green of the final match, America's Jack Nicklaus conceded a challenging final putt to his rival Tony Jacklin, sealing the first-ever tie in the competition's history. A gesture of pure sportsmanship that went down in the annals of global fair play.
Young Justin Rose's Record-Breaking Run (1998): In 1998, a 17-year-old English amateur left the sporting world open-mouthed. Justin Rose finished the tournament in a fabulous tie for fourth place, holing out a memorable shot from the rough on the Sunday 18th hole to the roar of the home crowd. He turned professional the very next day.
The 154th Open Favorites: Who Will Tame the Wind?
As we get closer to the first tee shot of the tournament, predictive models and technical forums are highlighting some familiar faces, along with a few exciting dark horses. Scottie Scheffler, the World No. 1, fresh off two brilliant finishes—a T4 at the U.S. Open in June at Shinnecock Hills, and a T2 at the recent Travelers Championship—obviously starts as the tournament favorite thanks to a swing consistency that borders on geometric perfection. Right behind him, analysts are keeping a close eye on links specialists like Rory McIlroy, who won here in 2017, and the reigning Claret Jug champion, both ready to deploy lower, wind-penetrating ball flights.
But keep your eyes peeled for outsiders like Chris Gotterup and some of our own Crew's favorites, Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood, who always spark huge excitement at our venues. Our Vercellina and Duse venues are fully backing Fleetwood, who has been hunting for that elusive major for years, and who could easily be the real underdog of this edition.
